Our story

It started as a holiday with our sons and their families: one of those spontaneous getaways where you expect nothing more than a bit of fresh air, a few good pints, and maybe a nice view or two. We had no idea that Glencolumbkille and Donegal were about to steal our hearts and change our lives forever.

Back in 2016, we found ourselves staying at a charming little bed and breakfast tucked between the mountains and the wild Atlantic coast. The landscapes were rugged and untamed, with a beauty that stopped us in our tracks. We hiked the sea cliffs, wandered ancient stone paths, and sat in the pubs swapping tales with new friends. By the end of the trip, we knew we’d found our next chapter.

As luck would have it, while talking to the host of the B&B one night, he mentioned that he was considering selling the place.

At first, we laughed at the idea because we had a whole life back in London with jobs, pets, routines, and the hustle of the city. But as many of our guests since have discovered, there’s a charm to the place that big cities just don’t have. So, we took the plunge, sold up, and moved our lives out here to pursue something different—something more real, something that connected us with new people and brought us happiness.

Since then, we’ve poured our hearts into making this B&B a home, not just for ourselves but for every guest who walks through our doors. We upgraded the rooms, swapped out the beds, gave the website a facelift, and made sure the building was in top shape. We even put up soccer posts in the front yard for guests and the neighbouring kids to enjoy.

We threw ourselves into the local community and even joined a group dedicated to preserving Donegal’s ancient stone monuments. Our adventures led us to hidden gems like the secret waterfall. We got involved with local bike rental services, boat tour providers, restaurants, and even diving clubs to create a network of businesses that help each other flourish—and in doing so provides you with more options for your stay.

Running Aras BnB isn’t just a job for us, it’s a shared experience of getting to know our guests, and explaining the magic and history of Donegal. So, whether you’re looking for an adventure, a quiet escape, or just a hearty breakfast with a view, we’re here to make sure you experience Donegal the way it’s meant to be: with open arms, a bit of craic, and plenty of tea.
